Heimlich Maneuver
A first-aid procedure that can save a person's life if they are choking and conscious.It involves performing abdominal thrusts to dislodge a foreign object from a person's airway.
The Heimlich maneuver can be a life-saving rescue technique, but it should only be used if the person can't breathe and is conscious.
How to Perform Heimlich Maneuver to Other Person?
- Stand behind the person.
- Make a fist with one hand and place it between their navel and ribcage.
- Grasp your fist with your other hand.
- Perform five abdominal thrusts by pulling your fist sharply inward and upward.
- Repeat until the object is expelled and the person can breathe or cough.
- If the person is obese or late in their pregnancy, you can perform chest thrusts instead.
How to Perfom Self Heimlich Maneuver?
- Place a fist slightly above your navel.
- Grasp your fist with the other hand.
- Bend over a hard surface. A countertop or chair will do.
- Shove your fist inward and upward.
When to "DO" Heimlich Maneuver?
When someone is choking?
Signs of choking:
- Inability to speak or make a sound
- Clutching their throat
- Placing their hands on their neck
When to "NOT" do Heimlich Maneuver?
If the person is able to Speak
If the person is able to Cough
If the person is able to Breathe
